Ethernet Switches (continued)
Now, there are certain jobs on Local Area Networks that just work better if little tiny messages are broadcast to everybody. So, by common agreement, there are certain protocols that are designated for broadcast, and the little microprocessors in these Switches are smart enough to recognize those special messages, and broadcast them anyway.
Broadcasting Hub-style will also occur whenever the little microprocessor brain in one of these Switches becomes confused (and that does happen; either when an attacker that knows how to send confusing messages gets nasty, or when there’s a power failure, or any number of things). So broadcasting does have to happen, but Switching does cut broadcasting down quite a bit, and increases the efficiency of a large network.
