Traceroute: "Ping" on Steroids!

If you'd like to know how the "tracert" or "traceroute" command works and how it can help you discover information about the probable location of and networks used by other people on the Internet, you've come to the right place.

Clicking on the "View Now" icon above will cause your "Windows Media Player" to show the first segment of our free movie on the subject. This movie has 7 segments, and all of the other segments are also available for free. Each can be found through a link at the bottom of each subsequent page. Each page also contains related text, relevant advertisements, and small images, and you can click on most of those images to see a larger version or another related movie clip. This movie is part of a large library of similar movies, all available for free, that can teach you about the Internet and networking technology.  AskMisterWizard.com is an online magazine about modern technology, and we publish new articles, video clips, and audio clips every month. "Traceroute" (the command is spelled "tracert" under Windows) is the best way to discover the Internet pathway between your computer and some other IP address.

In the AskMisterWizard.com movie entitled "Ping: The Network Troubleshooter's Favorite Tool", we showed how one Internet-compatible computer can send a - "ping" - message to another, receiving a response as if it had - "bounced" - back. If you haven't seen that movie yet, you should watch it before proceeding here, because this movie builds on those concepts, and it explains how to issue commands from a DOS window and format command lines of the type that we'll be showing here in the segments that follow.

For this movie, let's shift our vantage point inside the Internet so we can watch that ping operation in greater detail...
