"Traceroute" (the command is spelled "tracert" under Windows) is the best way to discover the Internet pathway between your computer and some other IP address.

In the AskMisterWizard.com movie entitled "Ping: The Network Troubleshooter's Favorite Tool", we showed how one Internet-compatible computer can send a - "ping" - message to another, receiving a response as if it had - "bounced" - back.
